Storm leaves death, tears in its wake

Death blew in on the superstorm's wild winds and sea water torrents, claiming 90-year-olds and children with capriciously toppling trees, taking tall-ship adventurers in mountainous Atlantic waves and average folks just trying to deal with a freakish snowstorm. It felled both heroes rushing into harm's way and, ironically, people simply following advice to play it safe at home.

At least 72 died as the shape-shifting hurricane and winter storm ravaged the eastern U.S., and searchers continued looking for victims Wednesday.

In New York City, a college student went out to take pictures in the borough of Queens and was electrocuted by a downed power line, while across town on Staten Island, an off-duty policeman drowned after moving his family to safety.

Lauren Abraham, who went by the nickname LolaDiva on YouTube, was a makeup artist who worked out of a studio in her parents' Queens home. The recent beauty school graduate was studying at City University of New York's Lehman College, according to her Facebook page. "In her time of reflection she learned to find the beauty in even the darkest situations," her online bio reads.

As the superstorm ravaged New York and floodwater surged into his Staten Island house Monday evening, off-duty NYPD officer Artur Kasprzak, 28, shepherded six adult relatives and a baby to the attic.

Then, according to police, Kasprzak, a six-year veteran of the force, told one of the women he was going to check the basement. When he didn't return, she called 911. Police came quickly with a SCUBA unit, but couldn't access the home because power lines had fallen into the water.

"He went to the basement. And the water just started washing in," his sister Marta told the Daily News. "He was pushed into a window. ... The water just kept coming in."

Bunting draped a firehouse in Easton, Conn., honoring another first responder who rushed to help. Lt. Russell Neary was killed when an enormous tree crashed down on his fire truck as he and others tried to clear storm debris.

"We're a small volunteer department, and so everybody knew everybody," said Casey Meskers, the department vice president. Neary was the president. An insurance executive, he had volunteered for 13 years, and also helped with his children's sports teams.

"We've been on the soccer fields with each other with our kids," Meskers said Wednesday. "There's been a lot of tears shed, I'll tell you."

So many times, trees and heavy limbs that fell to the storm's powerful gusts left mourners along its path.

Two people died when a tree fell on their vehicle in Morris County, N.J., and many others perished inside homes, where they thought they'd be safe ? from North Salem, N.Y., where two boys, 11 and 13, were killed when a tree fell on their home, to Pasadena, Md.

Donald Cannata Sr., 73, was at home in Pasadena, a leafy suburb between Baltimore and Annapolis, when the storm knocked a large tree into his house. The retired civil engineer lived alone with his cat and dog and had stepped into the kitchen just when the tree fell.

He loved photography and opera and was considerate, hardworking and selfless, said his son, Donald Jr., an opinion shared by neighbors. Cannata's son said his father's death "shook me so to the core," partly because they had talked about taking down the tree.

"We talked about it so many times. I said, 'Pop, the tree's getting pretty old,'" Cannata said.

An elderly man trimming a tree in Pennsylvania's Lancaster County was killed when a limb broke and fell on him, authorities said.

A limb fall also killed John Rose Sr. as he and his wife checked fences on his snow-covered 100-acre farm near Philippi, W.Va., on Tuesday. The storm had dumped about seven inches of snow in the region, where Rose was a Republican candidate for the House of Delegates. He had traveled to Charleston regularly to lobby lawmakers on farming and other issues, and he hoped to continue making the trip as a member.

Rose, 60, had previously run a power-washing business and worked as a coal miner, his son George Rose said.

"The whole county knew him," he said.

The storm's blizzard threat was still far off when, churning in the relatively warm Atlantic off Cape Hatteras, N.C., on Monday, Hurricane Sandy engulfed the replica tall ship HMS Bounty. The ship, which was featured in the films "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," took on water and eventually went down.

Coast Guard rescuers saved most of the 17 crew members, but a search continues for the ship's captain, Robin Wallbridge.

Swept overboard with him was Claudene Christian, 42, who said she was a direct descendant of the man who led the infamous 1789 mutiny on the real HMS Bounty. In the 1962 Bounty film, Marlon Brando starred as lead mutineer Fletcher Christian.

Searchers found Christian ? a novice sailor who was wearing an orange survival suit ? unresponsive in the water late Monday, about eight nautical miles from where the Bounty sank. She was flown by helicopter to a hospital on the mainland, where she was pronounced dead.

A marketing specialist, she had lived in Alaska, Oklahoma and California. She was a member of the University of Southern California cheering squad, the Song Girls, from 1989 to 1991, said coach Lori Nelson. "Claudene will always be remembered for her energetic and bubbly personality on and off the field," the team posted on its Facebook page.

Endless accidents that would be described as freak twists of fate spun off from the superstorm.

Eugene "Rusty" Brooks, 42, of Woodstock, N.H., died Tuesday morning when a hillside construction site in the state's White Mountains collapsed beneath him. Brooks, owner of Pemmi Contracting, had been preparing a cellar on a home site on Loon Mountain in the ski resort town of Lincoln, said Police Chief Ted Smith. The cellar hole had filled up with rain from Sandy, and Brooks had just thrown a hose in to drain it off when the ground gave way.

"The retaining wall just liquefied with him standing there," Smith said. "He washed down with all the boulders, mud and water into the street."

When police and rescue workers arrived, they found a bystander performing CPR on Brooks, who could not be revived.

"It just basically was a freak, bizarre accident," the chief said. "It could have given way prior to him being there or afterwards."

The massive storm's unrelenting stress was blamed as a contributor to death by some loved ones, and in other cases the paralyzing wind and water compounded medical problems.

An Atlantic City, N.J., woman had a heart attack while she was being evacuated on Monday, officials reported.

In Pennsylvania's Lehigh County, an 86-year-old woman was pronounced dead of hypothermia after being found unresponsive in her yard following exposure to the storm, and a 48-year-old woman died of carbon monoxide poisoning in her home, the coroner's office reported.

A 90-year-old woman also died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator in the Philadelphia area, one of two claimed by the storm at age 90. The other was a Mansfield, Conn., woman who neighbors said left her home after a small tree snapped and was killed by a larger one.

In New York City, Herminia St. John, a 75-year-old grandmother of 14 who suffered from congestive heart failure and diabetes, died after her oxygen machine lost power and a backup failed. Her grandson, Claudio St. John, rushed into the street and tried unsuccessfully to flag down an ambulance. Finally, he went around the corner to Bellevue Hospital, where his mother worked as a food supervisor for 30 years. But by the time someone came it was too late.

"I hugged her and she hugged and kissed me," Elsa St. John, 54, told the Daily News. "She asked me to turn her to the window and she was gone."

Pacific Coast Commercial | Basic Training: These tips can help ...

October 31, 2012

?

Commercial real estate in San Diego has experienced a dynamic market shift during the past five years that has affected nearly every aspect of the industry.

?

As the slow economic recovery remains fragile, many commercial property owners and investors wonder if they can survive the still-shaky market. The answer is yes, they can.

?

The solutions for the future are rooted in back-to-basics fundamentals. The following survival tips equip commercial property owners and investors with strategies to successfully navigate the unpredictable market conditions that lie ahead.

?

?

?

?

?

Be Prepared

Preparation is the first and most important step to surviving a severe financial downturn. This step is especially critical in commercial real estate, since the industry is affected by so many variables that are outside of property owners? and investors? control.

?

A key preparation strategy is to monitor the capital markets and fluctuations in financing availability and industry trends. Keeping a watchful eye on emerging patterns can help owners and investors better understand real estate cycles and steer clear of danger.

?

In addition to analyzing industry trends, it is essential to keep track of the U.S. and global economies. With potential policy changes looming ahead after the upcoming presidential election, U.S. business owners should evaluate their current strategies and assess how commercial real estate in San Diego may be impacted by legislative modifications and the resulting global trends.

?

?

Know Your Clients

Clients can be a good barometer for what is coming next in the industry. An in-depth understanding of the financial markets and U.S. global economies can help companies better serve their clients as the industry shifts and changes. By understanding and monitoring lenders and industry niches, companies will be better prepared to change gears, secure different types of lending sources, and adapt to lenders who will provide the best financing programs for their clients? projects.

?

For example, after the savings and loan crisis in the 1990s, savings and loan entities disappeared, leaving a major shortage in commercial capital availability. At the time, George Smith Partners recognized that it needed to change its focus from savings and loans to the emerging Wall Street conduits and commercial mortgage-backed securities market. As one of the first companies in the industry to arrange CMBS financing, GSP built strong relationships with these new capital sources, many of which have become long-standing business relationships.

?

?

Communication Is Key

Technology evolves almost as quickly as the markets change. Commercial property owners, agents in San Diego commercial real estate leasing, and investors must harness new technologies and stay connected with clients, lenders, and other allied professionals. Ongoing communication and use of the latest technology is vital to retaining growth during a recession, as well as for staying at the forefront of the changing market.

?

For instance, in an effort to better market its services to clients and capital providers, GSP created a weekly faxed newsletter focused on insights into critical and relevant issues affecting the commercial real estate and financial industries. Over the years the subscriber base has grown; the newsletter is no longer faxed but now emailed to more than 100,000 recipients each week and has become a resourceful, invaluable tool for clients and industry constituents.

?

Company leaders must identify the communication tools that best suit their industry niche and client base. For some, the ongoing conversation and visibility of social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter can be far more beneficial to business development than more-traditional forms of communication. However, companies must strike a balance between traditional marketing and current communications techniques to remain successful.

?

?

Watch the Road Ahead

Predicting future market cycles is a difficult task, with unexpected sea changes in the capital markets as well as the macro and micro economies that affect San Diego commercial real estate leasing. Yet it is imperative to focus on the road ahead and try to look around corners to anticipate what is next.

?

In the short term, November?s U.S. presidential election is likely to have an impact on the economy, employment, regulation and taxes, and the fiscal markets, all of which impact commercial real estate. In addition, Europe?s financial crisis will continue to have domestic economic repercussions.

?

In the long term, the future of commercial real estate largely depends upon the economy and job creation over the next decade. There are some promising indicators that the economic train is on the right track: Capital markets have become more aggressive, and lenders and equity sources are actively seeking solid commercial real estate assets to finance. However, the economic recovery remains susceptible to many global and domestic factors that are rapidly changing.

?

As property owners and investors look ahead, it?s wise to take lessons learned in the recent past and use them to strategize for the future. With the right strategies and tools, property owners can prepare themselves for whatever the market may hold in the years ahead.?

Smokers miss work more often, cost UK billions - study

(Reuters) - Smokers miss an average of two or three more days of work each year than non-smokers, with this absenteeism costing the UK alone 1.4 billion pounds last year, according to a UK study.

The report, which appeared in the journal Addiction, analysed 29 separate studies conducted between 1960 and 2011 in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the United States and Japan, with a total of over 71,000 public and private sector workers.

Researchers asked the workers about their current and former smoking habits and used surveys or medical and employee records to track how often they were absent over an average of two years.

Current smokers were 33 percent more likely to miss work than non-smokers, and they were absent an average of 2.7 extra days per year, according to Jo Leonardi-Bee of the University of Nottingham and her colleagues.

The researchers calculated that current smokers were still 19 percent more likely to miss work than ex-smokers, so encouraging smokers to quit could help reverse some of the lost-work trends.

"Quitting smoking appears to reduce absenteeism and result in substantial cost-savings for employers," wrote Leonardi-Bee and her colleagues.

The 1.4 billion pounds lost in the UK due to smoking-related absenteeism is only one cost of smoking in the workplace, according to Leonardi-Bee and her colleagues. Others include productivity lost to smoking breaks and the cost of cigarette, related fire damage.

In the analysis, smoking was tied to workers' short-term absences as well as leaves of four weeks or more.

"Clearly the most important message for any individual's health is, 'Quit smoking,' but I think that message is pretty well out there," said Douglas Levy, a tobacco and public health researcher from the Harvard Medical School in Boston who wasn't a part of the study.

"I think (the study) does point to the fact that this is something that doesn't just affect the individual, it affects the economy as well."

Levy's own research has shown that children living with smokers are more likely to be absent from school. Secondhand smoke has been tied to a range of health ailments, from asthma to heart attacks, so employees who light up may also have to miss work more often to stay at home with sick family members.

Levy said the most important finding was the reduction in absenteeism after workers quit smoking, supporting the idea of companies funding smoking-cessation classes and other workplace health programs. SOURCE: http://bitly.com/W2Djfq

Nuclear plants shut down units as storm hits coast

(AP) ? Parts of two nuclear power plants were shut down late Monday and early Tuesday, while another plant ? the nation's oldest ? was put on alert after waters from Superstorm Sandy rose 6 feet above sea level.

One of the units at Indian Point, a plant about 45 miles north of New York City, was shut down Monday because of external electrical grid issues, said Entergy Corp., which operates the plant. The company said there was no risk to employees or the public, and the plant was not at risk due to water levels from the Hudson River, which reached 9 feet 8 inches and was subsiding. Another unit at the plant was still operating at full power.

One unit at the Salem plant in Hancocks Bridge, N.J., near the Delaware River, was shut down Tuesday because four of its six circulating water pumps were no longer available, according to PSEG Nuclear. The pumps are used to condense steam on the non-nuclear side of the plant. Another Salem unit has been offline since Oct. 14 for refueling, but the nearby Hope Creek plant remains at full power. Together, the Salem and Hope Creek plants produce enough power for about 3 million homes per day.

The oldest U.S. nuclear power plant, New Jersey's Oyster Creek, was already out of service for scheduled refueling. But high water levels at the facility, which sits along Barnegat Bay, prompted safety officials to declare an "unusual event" around 7 p.m. About two hours later, the situation was upgraded to an "alert," the second-lowest in a four-tiered warning system.

Conditions were still safe at Oyster Creek, Indian Point and all other U.S. nuclear plants, said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which oversees plant safety.

A rising tide, the direction of the wind and the storm's surge combined to raise water levels in Oyster Creek's intake structure, the NRC said. The agency said that water levels are expected to recede within hours and that the plant, which went online in 1969 and is set to close in 2019, is watertight and capable of withstanding hurricane-force winds.

The plant's owner, Exelon Corp., said power was also disrupted in the station's switchyard, but backup diesel generators were providing stable power, with more than two weeks of fuel on hand.

In other parts of the East Coast, nuclear plants were weathering the storm without incident.

Inspectors from the NRC, whose own headquarters and Northeast regional office were closed for the storm, were manning all plants around the clock. The agency dispatched extra inspectors or placed them on standby in five states, equipped with satellite phones to ensure uninterrupted contact.

Nuclear power plants are built to withstand hurricanes, airplane collisions and other major disasters, but safety procedures call for plants to be shut down when hurricane-force winds are present, or if water levels nearby exceed certain flood limits.

In Lusby, Md., the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant was operating at full power ? enough to power more than 1 million homes. Additional staff, both onsite and off, were called in to prepare for the storm. Safety officials there will take the plant offline if sustained winds exceed 75 mph or water levels rise more than 10 feet above normal sea level.

At Pennsylvania's Susquehanna plant in Salem Township, officials were ready to activate their emergency plan, a precursor to taking the plant offline, if sustained winds hit 80 mph.

"Our top concern is ensuring that the plants are in a safe condition, that they are following their severe weather procedures," said Diane Screnci of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She said that even though the agency's headquarters and regional office had been closed, its incident response center was staffed, with other regions ready to lend a hand if necessary.

At the Millstone nuclear power complex on Connecticut's shoreline, officials said earlier Monday they were powering down one of the two reactors to 75 percent of maximum output to maintain stability of the electric grid. Millstone spokesman Ken Holt said the grid's stability could be affected if the unit was operating at 100 percent and suddenly went offline, which isn't expected to happen.

Some 60 million people in 13 states plus the District of Columbia get their power from PJM, the largest regional power grid in the U.S. Contingency plans call for power to be brought in from other areas to replace power lost if a nuclear plant reduces output or goes offline.

"It's done instantaneously," said Paula DuPont-Kidd, a spokeswoman for the grid. "Even if multiple plants go offline at the same time, we'd have to see how adjustments would be made, but for the most part we plan for that scenario."

In August 2011, multiple nuclear plants shut down due to Hurricane Irene, with others reducing power.

Although nuclear plants are built for resilience, their operations get more complicated when only emergency personnel are on duty or if external electricity gets knocked out, as often happens during hurricanes.

"When external power is not available, you have to use standby generators," said Sudarshan Loyalka, who teaches nuclear engineering at University of Missouri. "You just don't want to rely on backup power."

THE RACE: Obama and Romney both focusing on Sandy

President Barack Obama and rival Mitt Romney are both carefully navigating a path through disaster politics.

Both want to show their main focus isn't on the election just a week away but on relief and cleanup from one of the worst-ever storms to slam the East Coast and to show compassion for victims.

But with the race so close ? both in the polls and on the calendar ? the stakes remain enormous. And while active campaigning was dialed back by both candidates, the contest still simmered.

The sprawling storm that began as Hurricane Sandy could help Obama if voters approve of his leadership during the crisis.

Playing the presidential card, he canceled all campaign events Tuesday and Wednesday and held a late-morning conference call with storm-state governors and mayors.

He declared major disaster areas within hard-hit New York and New Jersey, drawing praise from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Christie, a Republican Romney supporter, said he and Obama talked several times Monday, including a call at midnight. He said Obama gave him a direct phone number to reach him and promised to expedite federal aid. The president and federal disaster officials "have been outstanding with us so far," said Christie.

Obama earlier declared other states along the storm's path as disaster areas eligible for quick federal help.

Lacking a formal role, Romney Tuesday attended a "storm relief event" near Dayton, Ohio, and was helping to collect canned goods and other donations for storm victims. Never mind that Ohio is a must-win swing state or that Romney shared the stage with popular NASCAR driver Richard Petty and country music singer Randy Owen.

"We're looking for all the help we can get for families in need," Romney told the crowd.

Running mate Rep. Paul Ryan and Ann Romney separately participated in storm-relief events.

Romney Testimony on Value of Staples Stock in Divorce Case Released

High-profile attorney Gloria Allred and the Boston Globe successfully argued to a Massachusetts judge that testimony that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave in 1991 regarding the value of stock in the office supply chain Staples should be released. The testimony was given during the divorce proceedings between Staples chief executive Tom Stemberg and his then-wife, Maureen Sullivan Stemberg. Romney's firm Bain Capital was at that time a major investor in the company, according to reports by the Washington Post and other media outlets.

The judge complied with Allred's request on Thursday, but did not grant requests that the gag order restricting Sullivan Stemberg's ability to comment on the case be lifted. Allred had told the media that Romney's testimony would be important as the presidential campaign season comes to a close, according to the Washington Post report.

Here is some of the key information regarding Romney's testimony and its potential political impact.

* At issue is whether or not Romney gave a purposely low estimate on the stand of Staples' stock value in order to ensure that Stemberg would be allowed to give his wife a smaller settlement payment, according to the Washington Post.

* The New York Times pointed out on Thursday evening that Stemberg spoke at the Republican National Convention in August, and that Romney has frequently used the story of the office-supply chain's success as "evidence of his economic prowess" while on the campaign trail this year.

* Lawyers for Romney reportedly did not object to the release of the transcripts, which cover in detail the manner in which Bain Capital sought to assess the risks involved in investing in a startup company, which Staples was at the time.

* The testimony took place over three days in 1991, after Sullivan Stemberg filed a suit seeking to overturn the original 1988 decision in her and her husband's divorce, alleging that the stock value of the company had been deliberately downplayed.

* According to the Associated Press, Romney did admit during his testimony that he and other investors created "a special class of company stock" as a "favor" to Stemberg during his divorce.

* Reuters was among the outlets that assessed that, despite Allred's claims that the testimony would prove to be politically harmful for Romney, there "appeared to contain little likely to damage the candidate's chances in the Nov. 6 general election."

* Allred told the New York Times and other outlets on Thursday that the transcripts of Romney's testimony "don't mean much" on their own, but would be far more damaging if the judge had agreed to lift the gag order on her client to allow her to discuss them with the public.

Euro zone banks rally falters on earnings outlook

LONDON (Reuters) - A big rally in euro zone bank shares on the back of central bank action to fix the region's debt crisis may have run its course as doubts over the sector's earnings outlook keep many long-term investors sidelined.

While stock markets have paused across the globe after a June-September rally, worries over regulation and the growth outlook may see euro zone banks underperform even if other stocks make further gains.

Euro zone banks are up over 40 percent <.sx7e> since European Central Bank President Mario Draghi pledged in late July to defend the euro, prompting many betting against banks most exposed to a collapse of the currency to close the trades.

But looming regulatory demands, including that banks hold more cash to protect against further financial stress, promise to suppress earnings growth for the foreseeable future and make what was once a very cheap sector seem relatively overpriced.

"A lot of the policy concern has receded... but we are at a point now in terms of valuation of the banking sector where we need to see the next stage in terms of growth... and earnings uplift in order to drive the sector forward," John Bilton, European Investment Strategist at BofA/Merrill Lynch, said.

Banks in peripheral Europe have been under the microscope since spiraling debt costs in countries such as Spain shut most out of debt and money markets and led governments to seek billions of euros in international aid.

While the threat of euro zone break-up and a renewed banking crisis has faded for, there has been no rush to buy bank shares.

"My concerns about bank stocks are that regulatory pressure combined with higher capital requirements will be a burden to profitability going forward," said Stefan Angele, Head of Investment Management at Swiss & Global Asset Management.

"Compared to some other sectors (like Healthcare or IT), the financial sector as a whole looks less attractive, especially after the recent rally that has brought valuations up again."

While the rally still leaves most banks trading below their "book" value - the accounting value of the firm's assets - which makes them underpriced by pre-crisis standards, valuations compared to recent history are less attractive.

Spain's Banco Santander , for example, trades with a price to book ratio of 0.8, meaning the stock is trading at a 20 percent discount to its accounting value, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine data. This is cheap compared to a 15-year average of 1.7, but is higher than the two-year average of 0.7.

Spain's banking crisis does not make this trend exceptional, and other euro zone lenders tell a similar story.

France's Credit Agricole , for example, is trading at a Price/Book of 0.36, below its 15-year average of 0.85, yet at a premium to the two-year average of 0.28.

In spite of the ECB action and the subsequent rally, for some, banks are still trading below book value for good reason.

"I don't own any, and I can't imagine hardly any scenario when I'd want them," Neil Dwane, Chief Investment Officer for Europe at Allianz Global Investors, said of euro zone banks.

"Many of these banks have not yet been honest about what's on their balance sheet and what it's worth."

With much of the euro zone in recession, many banks are burdened with non-performing loans on real estate and other toxic assets.

GO WITH THE FLOWS

Hedge funds led the way at the beginning of the banks rally, closing out short bets, but longer-term mutual funds show no immediate inclination to chase the market higher.

UBS equity strategist Karen Olney said hedge funds, "underweight" banks three months ago, were now "neutral".

However, a recent poll of fund managers by BofA-Merrill Lynch showed fund managers were still net underweight on euro zone banks, although by less than before Draghi's pledge.

HSBC strategist Peter Sullivan said the rally in euro zone banks could go further if mutual funds moved from "underweight" position to "neutral" in line with the recent gains.

"The big international funds start from a position way below benchmark. In a positive case for banks you get the equivalent of a short squeeze, where the sector starts to outperform, which hurts, so then they start to close the underweight," he said.

Sullivan said Spanish banks, which took a hit earlier in the year, could benefit from ECB bond buying before the end of 2012.

However, given the risks the euro zone banking sector faces, and the poor experience of recent years, some investors may be very wary before switching their flows back to euro zone banks.

"In an environment, when it's been right to take the pessimistic side whenever it comes to banks, it's not surprising that investors aren't immediately switching," he said.

3 Great Questions from our SharePoint 2010 Webinar ? Business ...

Can I hide documents that have a status other than approved in a documentSharePoint library?

In fact it?s just a couple of clicks to set this up in an existing library:

  1. Navigate to the library that needs this feature.
  2. From the Ribbon, click on the Library Settings button.
  3. Select Versioning Settings in the General Settings section of the screen.
  4. The very first setting (Content Approval) needs to be set to Yes.
  5. In the Draft Item Security setting , check either the 2nd or 3rd radio button depending upon the level of security you need.

How do I set up that Word co-authorship capability in my SharePointSharePoint environment?

Easiest question I answered that day! If you?re using SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010, the answer is, absolutely nothing! Simply have two or more users open the document from SharePoint. Choose to Edit the document from the banner above the document in Word. Voila! Co-authorship.

Can you post calendar and task items to SharePoint from Outlook?SharePoint

Yes! After connecting your SharePoint task list or calendar to Outlook, you can copy items from your calendar or task lists to the SharePoint copy. You can create a calendar item directly in Outlook 2010 and it will appear on SharePoint after a Send/Receive action (F9). With tasks, I?ve had mixed results with creating the SharePoint task folder in Outlook. However, you can create the task in your own tasks in Outlook and drag and drop it to the SharePoint folder.

Hierarchy of Needs ? Life is Mysterious

?What we call normal in psychology is really a psychopathology of the average, so undramatic and so widely spread that we don't even notice it ordinarily. ?This quote is by Abraham Maslow, the theorist who gave us the idea of the hierarchy of needs; once your basic needs are met you begin to seek higher needs, and the idea of self-actualization.? Maslow's point is that being normal, being average, although normally perceived as okay, is pathology. ?Pathology can be defined as disease or sickness. ?The dictionary's definition of psychopathology is "The study of the origin, development, and manifestations of mental or behavioral disorders," or "the manifestation of a mental or behavioral disorder." Most people would be offended if someone were to say that they were average. ?Yet, by definition, most are. ?Average in psychological terms is a huge category, encompassing the majority of the population. ?Those that are not average are outliers. ?Outliers are the small percentage at either end of the bell curve. ?They are either well below average, or well above. ?Average in this sense doesn't have much to do with not being an individual. ?You can be an individual yet fall well within the average.?

So now that we are all feeling insulted, let's discuss what Maslow was saying and why it is so important. ?Maslow's contention was that the ultimate goal of humans is to self-actualize, to become all they can in a lifelong process of self-improvement. ?He also contended that all humans have this potential. ?But before that can happen, other needs which are positioned below self actualization must be met. ?These include physiological needs, needs for safety, needs for love and belonging, and the need for esteem. ?Once these needs are met, the individual can look toward self actualization. ?Not striving toward being all you can be is your Pathology. ?He is using this bold statement to get your attention and to encourage you to take action.?

It can be assumed most people in America, have the lower needs met. ?Most have enough food, water, and shelter. ?Most do not feel constant threats to their safety. ?Hopefully, you feel loved and a sense of belonging. ?So with these needs met, we can move toward feeling esteemed. ?This need encompasses self confidence, feeling competent, and believing at least some others hold you in high esteem. ?Again, it seems reasonable that many readers have these needs met as well. ?This is not to say you feel this way all of the time. ?There may always be flare-ups of self doubt. ?But it is understood that generally, most of the time, you feel confident in yourself and your abilities. ?So, with all of these important needs met, why aren't more people becoming self actualized??

The answer is simple: we become complacent with these lower, but important needs. ?Then, instead of working toward self-actualization people become consumers: keeping up with the Joneses, being the first on our block to have the newest gadget, over-indulging in "entertainment needs" (movies, television, and trips) and otherwise trying to fill the yearning for a higher purpose with purchases, rather than self-improvement.?

Perhaps what is keeping the majority of people from self actualizing is that they are misinterpreting their yearning for self-actualization as a need for more of something else: More love, more things, more fun. ?Therefore the solution is to cease filling the void with things, and instead, focus on you, and what you can be. ?What are you doing that is creative? ?What are you doing to exercise your mind? What are you doing to make the planet and your fellow humans better? What are you doing to be happier with you, rather than your possessions? Answer these questions and the movement toward self-actualization begins.?

If you still have trouble getting started or maintaining progress, it is possible that there are unconscious forces that lie within you that are keeping you stagnated. ?One suggestion is to enter therapy so you can discover these blocks, remove them, and get back on track. ?Making the unconscious more conscious is one of the most beneficial aspects of therapy. ?So often today we view therapy simply as a place to vent or get some direction with other life problems. ?But at its best, therapy is geared toward insight, toward understanding yourself, and to becoming self-actualized. Good luck on your journey.

Edmonds Military Wire: Truth or fiction? Obama trumps Romney in military support

By Michael Schindler

When it comes to conventional thought ? at least in the circles I tend to frequent ? most assume those of us that serve or have served are rather conservative; that we all stand on principles like duty, honor, and country ? and that those words, first spoken in a speech by General MacArthur, are the epitome of conservative values. I would tend to agree. But not so, according to Joan McCarter.

Now before I alienate some of my loyal readers here, let me preface this by saying this piece is not intended to be political, but rather intended to enlighten and engage; that is code for: If this makes you mad, not my fault, it was the writer who first reported this that is responsible (sorry, couldn?t resist).
Joan McCarter, writer for the Daily Kos ? a left-leaning national community blog site founded by Army veteran Markos Zuniga in 2002 ? reported in one of her recent blogs that ?[T]he military?s support has shifted toward Obama. Romney has consistently received little financial backing from military donors.?

Say it isn?t so.

But Joan was then backed up by Rachel Maddow (I know. Some of you are wondering what the heck I?m doing reading anything other than FOX) who reported in her blog that ?Based on reporting from the Center for Responsive Politics, including September fundraising, Obama has received $678,611 from military donors, far more than Romney?s total of $398,450.?

And then Business Week backed up the claim. To make matters worse, the Romney figure also ?narrowly trails Ron Paul?s $399,274 in contributions from the military.?

McCarter seems to think this has to do with the president keeping his promise to end two wars (that still aren?t really ended) and that Romney sees the military as simply a demographic to win over for political gain.

Could McCarter actually be right on this? I have my own opinion but I?m a numbers guy and the numbers favor her statement ? they don?t make her opinion correct ? but the huge difference between the two candidates in contributions make me question why.

Does it really all come down to ?I can see myself having a beer with the guy?? If that?s the case, Obama wins by default. I certainly hope there are more substantial reasons behind the disparity in numbers.

Bottom line: I voted. In this election I am certain every vote will matter. So vote. And remember this: our service members take an oath to support and defend the Constitution and that we?ll obey the orders of the President (as long as they don?t violate the Constitution) ? regardless of whom is our next president.

Michael Schindler, Navy veteran, and president of Edmonds-based Operation Military Family, is a guest writer for several national publications, author of the book ?Operation Military Family? and ?The Military Wire? blog. He is also a popular keynote and workshop speaker who reaches thousands of service members and their families every year through workshops and seminars that include? ?How to Battle-Ready Your Relationship? or ?What Your Mother-in-Law Didn?t Tell You.?? He received the 2010 Outstanding Patriotic Service Award from the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs.

What are you reading during Hurricane Sandy? | Drexel Publishing ...

Hurricane Sandy?s massive wallop on the Mid-Atlantic States begins today. I don?t expect to? have power (in my neighborhood we lose power if someone sneezes too hard) , so it?s reading by candlelight for me. I?ll be enjoying a few things, but I?m really excited about the 11th issue of New Ohio Review. The theme is collaboration. I don?t get a chance to read journals as often as I like, but this one was a birthday present to myself because it looked so extraordinary.

Why did I order this issue a few weeks ago? Because of what?s happening inside: Tony Hoagland has a piece of drama (theatre drama, not office drama). Hoagland is most known for poetry, so I?m really interested in reading this. The issue has poems from Denise Duhamel, Jim Daniels, Billy Collins,? and many others. The features section has several collaborative pieces including one by Duhamel and Amy Lemmon, and another by Ron Padgett with writing from Allen Ginsberg and Kenneth Koch.? I?m also looking forward to reading work by writers I don?t know (in several genres).

New writers, new work from established writers, the craft of blending different voices through a common theme ? this is why I love reading journals. It?s like hearing good music performed live: as you make your way through the issue, consider that the pieces you?re experiencing got their world-debut in this place, at this time ? and you have a piece of that. Someday Duhamel?s ?Old Love Poems? on page 16 will appear in a book, and eventually it might be all over the Web, but in these pages is how Duhamel first shared it with the world. Pretty cool, if you ask me. If you?re interested in finding a journal you like, visit newpages.com.

And you?re reading during Hurricane Sandy?

Broadway takes few chances with superstorm coming

(AP) ? Broadway took the threat of the mammoth storm seriously, with theater owners canceling all Sunday evening and Monday performances of shows like "The Book of Mormon" ''Once" and "Mama Mia!" long before a drop of rain fell in Times Square.

"The safety and security of theatregoers and employees is everyone's primary concern," said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League, which represents producers.

Forecasts called for rain late Sunday or early Monday, and subway and public transportation service is to be halted Sunday evening, potentially stranding theatergoers. Refunds will be made available from the point of purchase.

Off-Broadway shows including "Stomp," ''Bad Jews," ''Disgraced" and "Golden Child" were also canceled Sunday night. Most matinees on and off Broadway stayed open. Mondays are usually very light on Broadway, with most shows having that as their day off.

Carnegie Hall canceled two concerts scheduled for Sunday night and rescheduled a Monday concert by "Rent" and "Wicked" star Idina Menzel, which will now take place Nov. 4.

Some Broadway shows had no evening shows scheduled Sunday, including "Cyrano de Bergerac," ''Annie," ''Chaplin," ''Enemy of the People," ''Once," ''Jersey Boys" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It."

It was the most disruptive storm for the theater community since the threat of Hurricane Irene in late August 2011 prompted producers to cancel matinee and evening performances on Saturday and Sunday. While that hurricane mostly fizzled over New York, every show lost money because they were mostly limited to five or six performances that week.
