Microsoft unveiled an update to its latest Windows operating system Thursday that included a return of a "Start" button that had been missed by longtime users of the computer software.
The tweaked version of the operating system, nicknamed Windows Blue, will be previewed on June 26 and will be a free update for users of Windows 8.1, according to the Redmond, Washington-based technology titan.
"It's Windows 8 even better," Windows program management corporate vice president Antoine Leblond said in a blog post.
"Windows 8.1 will deliver improvements and enhancements in key areas like personalization, search, the built-in apps, Windows Store experience and cloud connectivity."
Microsoft returned a well-known Windows logo to the lower left corner of computer screens in what was seen as a resurrection of a banished "Start" button missed by users.
"Not only will Windows 8.1 respond to customer feedback, but it will add new features and functionality that advance the touch experience and mobile computing's potential," Leblond said.
Windows upgrades include Bing-powered searches that expand Internet queries to include searching apps and files on computers along with data stored in Microsoft's online SkyDrive service.
The update comes amid a lukewarm reception for Windows 8, an operating system released last year to help the software giant transition from personal computers to tablets and other mobile devices.
It remained unclear whether the return of the "Start" button would placate Windows users who saw the icon as a simple way to get to tools or tasks laid out on desktop screens.
"All I know is that something is back, but until I get my hands on Windows 8.1, I won't know exactly what," said analyst Michael Cherry of Directions On Microsoft, which specializes in tracking the software colossus.
"I think the real problem is that there are no Windows 8 apps that are worth using, so everyone really just wants to get to the desktop first."
Cherry took advantage of the option of customizing Windows 8 on his computer and thus opposes the return of the Start button.
Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc said a public preview of Windows 8.1 will be available starting on June 26, timed with the Microsoft developer conference in San Francisco.
Microsoft said recently it had sold than 100 million licenses for Windows 8 but that the update was planned after listening to customers.
Some analysts say Microsoft was forced to act because of slow adoption of Windows 8, which made some radical changes to the design of the desktop.
With Windows 8, Microsoft was trying to create a system that could be used on mobile touch screen devices while also serving the users of traditional PCs.
Microsoft launched Windows 8 last October, revamping its flagship system in an effort to make inroads in the fast-growing mobile segment. At the same time, it launched its Surface tablet computer.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European banks will be able to open branches and accounts in Syria for use by the opposition, European Union governments decided on Friday, relaxing economic sanctions to help the rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.
The decision comes days after the European Union lifted its arms embargo on Syria to allow weapons deliveries to the opposition, in hopes of tilting the balance of the two-year conflict in which more than 80,000 people have died.
The EU hopes that by providing access to financial services it can help the rebels fund humanitarian aid and restore basic utilities.
Aid is urgently needed in parts of Syria. The Red Cross has said some areas of the country are a landscape of "devastation and destruction".
Civilians have been cut off from water, electricity and life-saving medical supplies, particularly in rebel-held areas targeted by air strikes and ballistic missiles.
Under the new EU rules, which go into effect on Saturday, EU governments will be able to authorise banking services in Syria if the opposition has been consulted and the contacts do not contravene asset freezes imposed on Syrian companies or officials.
The U.S. government has already allowed American citizens, companies and banks to send money to the Syrian rebels, exempting them from sanctions imposed at the start of Assad's violent crackdown on anti-government protests.
The EU has also allowed European companies to buy oil from the Syrian rebels, although experts say any tangible economic benefit of such decisions may be far off because importers will likely be reluctant to wade into a war zone.

DETROIT (AP) ? Auto companies are hoping lower lease prices can put a charge into sluggish electric car sales.
Honda announced Thursday that it's slashing the monthly lease cost of its tiny Fit EV by one third, following similar moves by other automakers. Honda also is throwing in other goodies, such as a free home charging station and unlimited mileage.
Electric vehicles once were billed as the answer to high gas prices and dependence on foreign oil. But U.S. oil production is rising and gasoline supplies are abundant. Pump prices have remained relatively stable the past three years, while gas-powered cars have gotten more efficient, making consumers reluctant to give them up.
There's also the worry that an electric car could run out of juice on longer trips.
As a result, electric car sales are only a tiny fraction of overall U.S. auto sales. Automakers sold just over 12,000 pure-electric vehicles in the U.S. through April, according to Ward's AutoInfoBank and Tesla Motors. That's less than 1 percent of the 4.97 million cars and trucks sold during the same period. Even a $7,500 tax credit from the U.S. government that effectively lowers prices couldn't persuade most car buyers.
Automakers need to create a market for the cars among buyers who won't ordinarily go for the latest technology, said Larry Dominique, a former Nissan Motor Co. product chief.
"The early adopters are kind of phased out of the EV market. To get that broader appeal to the EV, they're doing some pretty aggressive lease deals," said Dominique, now an executive with the TrueCar.com auto pricing website.
The sluggish sales have dampened high expectations for electric car use. President Barack Obama has said he wants to put 1 million plug-in electric vehicles on the road by 2015, but with two years left, the nation is far short of that goal.
Still, the cheap leases and a broader selection of models are giving electric vehicles a boost. Sales for the first four months of this year already are 80 percent of last year's total sales of about 15,000.
The added models, though, have multiple automakers competing for a small number of buyers.
Automakers generally lose money on electric cars because the technology is so new and the batteries are costly. But they have been subsidizing sales by lowering prices. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said earlier this year that his company will lose $10,000 on every Fiat 500 electric vehicle it sells. Others have reported similar losses.
With the Fit EV, Honda is offering a $259 per month lease, down $130 from the initial $389 per month offer when the car went on sale in July of last year. The reduced price starts June 1 and will apply to existing Fit EV leases, Honda said. The three-year lease requires no money down and comes with unlimited mileage, free routine maintenance, collision insurance coverage and a free 240-volt home charging station, the company said Thursday. The charging station normally costs $995. The car buyer must take care of installation.
"Although we feel the Fit EV offers significant product benefits over other electric vehicles, in order to effectively compete in the EV market, we need a more competitive price," Honda Motor Co. spokeswoman Robyn Eagles said in a statement.
Earlier this month, General Motors Co. said that it would lease the subcompact Spark EV for $199 per month with $999 due at signing as it goes on sale in California and Oregon. Nissan is offering a $199-per-month lease on its Leaf electric car with $1,999 down. That's down from a high of $369 per month back in 2011.
Both the Spark and Leaf leases run for three years but have 12,000-mile annual limits on the number of miles one can drive without incurring mileage charges.
The lower lease prices put an electric car on par with a comparable small car. For instance, you can lease a gas-powered Fit for $169 per month for three years, with about $2,000 down. Automakers can offer the cheap lease deals on electric cars in part because they get the $7,500 tax credit.
Sales of the subcompact Fit EV have been particularly slow. Through April, Honda has sold or leased only 68 in the U.S. Last year it sold or leased only 93, according to Ward's.
The Fit EV can go 82 miles on a single charge and gets the equivalent of 118 miles per gallon of gasoline.
Honda rolled out the Fit EV last summer in California and Oregon. It now has 36 dealers trained to sell and service the cars in states including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island and Connecticut. It plans to expand that network to more than 200 dealers by the end of June.

Presumably to preserve its heritage, Ikea uses traditional Swedish names for all of its products, even in its hundreds and hundreds of stores outside the country. So those of us who grew up with English as our mother tongue are left scratching our heads as we wander through an Ikea showroom, afraid to take a stab at pronouncing a particular product lest we sound like fools. But not any longer.
Ikea Pa Svenka, or Ikea In Swedish, randomly loads a small collection of pieces from Ikea's catalog, letting you click on any product to hear how to properly pronounce its name. For example, did you know Expedit, Ikea's popular shelving system, actually has a soft 'i' at the end? Turns out I've been pronouncing it wrong all these years, and am now too embarrassed to ever show my face in an Ikea ever again. Oh well, at least they deliver. [Ikea In Swedish via Taxi]

Call Charles Ramsey a hero.
Call him a viral video sensation.
Just don't call him a hamburger.
Ramsey, the Cleveland man who early this month put down his hamburger to help free three kidnapped women and a little girl from a decadelong captivity, has been immortalized with his own burger.
Hodge's, a local restaurant where Ramsey worked as a dishwasher, named an eight-ounce, $12 burger for the man who became a sensation when a post-rescue video of him describing the scene went viral.
The restaurant, and several others, have also promised Ramsey burgers for life. But, through his lawyer, Ramsey said he didn't want any of that.
"Ramsey also wants everyone to know that he does not endorse the consortium of Northeast Ohio restaurants who are offering 'Ramsey Burgers' or who are promoting that Ramsey can receive free burgers from them for life," Patricia Walker, an intellectual property lawyer, said in a statement. "Ramsey encourages people to do things that will help the victims."
"I never told these people they could use my name for this," Ramsey said in a statement.
Ramsey has also objected to an online video game called Burger Bash, in which a crudely animated Ramsey and accused kidnapper Ariel Castro toss hamburgers to each other.
"I want everyone to know that I have nothing to do with this trash," Ramsey said

We know that the universe is roughly 13.8 billion years old?give or take a few hundred million years. Which seems like a decently accurate reading. But a new pair of clocks, which can measure time at a 1018 fractional level, makes our own measurements look like child's play. To have the same level of precision as these twin timepieces, we'd have to be able to specify the age of the known universe to within less than one second.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares were steady and the dollar remained firm on Wednesday as U.S. stocks rallied to record highs overnight on signs of resilience in the U.S. economy and expectations of continued monetary policy support.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> hit another record high on Tuesday as data showed U.S. home prices accelerated by the most in nearly seven years in March while consumer confidence picked up in May to its highest in more than five years.
The stock rally lifted benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to a 13-month peak around 2.17 percent. A strong rebound in Japanese stocks after last week's hammering also fed to speculation about reduced incentives to hold safe-haven U.S. government debt.
"The bullish tone at the start of the week would seem to indicate that investors are not yet convinced that evidence surrounding the economy is firm enough to corner the Fed chairman and force him into leading a retreat from the current pace of bond purchases," Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co in New York, said in a note to clients.
The rally seems to be "little other than a sense that last week's setback for U.S. and then Japanese stocks was justifiable in the big scheme of things. Pullbacks occur," he said, adding that for now, investors seem to still want to test recent highs.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> was steady, staying above Friday's five-week low of 464.99.
Australian shares <.axjo> were up 0.2 percent while South Korean shares <.ks11> opened 0.4 percent higher.
"The main board is likely to start up as overseas markets rallied on the previous day. However, autos could weigh due to the weak yen and cap gains later in the session," said Shawn Oh, an analyst at Daishin Securities, of Seoul shares.
The dollar inched up 0.1 percent against the yen to 102.48, recovering from a two-week low of 100.66 yen hit on Friday. The dollar scaled a 4-1/2 year peak of 103.74 yen on May 22.
The dollar index <.dxy> measured against a basket of six key currencies was up 0.3 percent to hover near its highest since July 2010 of 84.498 reached on May 23.
The Nikkei stock average <.n225> opened up 1.3 percent after closing up 1.2 percent the day before. <.t/>
"The Nikkei is in oversold territory, so buying should emerge," said Hiroichi Nishi, equity general manager at SMBC Nikko Securities. "Exporter shares will be in focus again as the yen resumes weakening, but we have to watch interest-rate related issues."
The Nikkei slumped 7.3 percent on Thursday, its largest single-day loss since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, as global financial markets were shaken by weak industrial production in China and concerns the U.S. Federal Reserve could scale back its current aggressive monetary stimulus sooner than previously thought. <.t/>
Speculation about the Fed's policy has weighed on the Australian dollar, which has skidded nearly 8 percent in May, the largest monthly drop since September 2011. The Aussie plumbed its lowest in 19 months on Wednesday after key support around $0.9581 finally gave way.
U.S. crude futures were off 0.3 percent at $94.74 a barrel.

I know it?s rather strange of me to not be as social inworld, especially since SL is a virtual world where people go to be more social. But I guess I?m kind of over that aspect of it and I just want to focus on other things. I do try to participate with community projects and challenges though within the blogger community. One challenge that I am kind of looking forward to trying is the Avatar Blogger Month in June. You can check the iRez blog for all of the details about that and I hope you participate in it as well!
For this post I wanted to create a soft and peaceful image with a relaxed theme, because that?s what I crave in my virtual world. The pose and arbor in this picture are from this month?s Zodiac Gemini. The dress was at FaMESHed this month but now you can find it in the Zaara mainstore.
Please remember that you can participate in any of the memes at any time. You?ll find them all under my Blog Challenges category along with other memes and challenges I?ve done over the years.

A date has been set to unveil President Dr Mohamed Waheed?s running mate for September?s presidential election, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party?(DRP) MP Dr Abdulla Mausoom has said,?with details to be ?disclosed at a later stage.?
Following an inaugural rally of President Waheed?s coalition on Friday night (May 24), local media reported that DRP Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali was likely to become Dr Waheed?s running mate.
A senior member of the coalition told local news website CNM that Thasmeen?s appointment was ?almost finalised? and other coalition parties had no objections.
Earlier this month, the?government-aligned DRP announced it would be joining?the?religious conservative Adhaalath Party?and the?Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP)?in a coalition?backing President Waheed.
Both the DQP and GIP are small political parties currently facing potential dissolution for lacking the minimum requirement of 10,000 members as stipulated in the recently passed Political Parties Act.
Dr Waheed?s Gaumee Ithihaad Party?(GIP)?currently has 3,930 registered members while the DRP has 21,411 members, according to the?Elections Commission (EC). The DRP is also the third largest party in parliament while the GIP has no representation in either the legislature or local councils.
Speaking at the inaugural rally on Friday night, DRP Leader Thasmeen praised President Waheed for taking office at a ?very tense? time for the country ? referring to the controversial transfer of power on February 7, 2012.
Thasmeen was quoted by local newspaper Haveeru as praising the president?s coalition, which he said had the professionals and academics capable of ?saving the nation?.
Contacted for comment, DRP Parliamentary Group Leader Dr Mausoom requested Minivan News contact the coalition?s media team.
The media team in turn forwarded all media requests to spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza.?Abbas, also spokesperson for President Waheed?s GIP, was not responding to call at time of press.
Meanwhile, Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights Azima Shukoor called for more parties to back President Waheed?s coalition to ensure former President Mohamed Nasheed did not return to office, according to local media reports.
Shukoor, former Attorney General under both Dr Waheed and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and a founding member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), was noticeably present at Friday night?s coalition rally, where she declared her support for President Waheed?s bid for the presidency.
Shukoor requested that other government-aligned parties who had not joined the coalition so so far opt to side with President Waheed in order to secure a first round win.
?Today, I think that the best thing to do would be to support the broad coalition and ensure its success in the election. We can?t let Nasheed become president. What we can do is be united, work together, and make sure that the broad coalition wins the election,? she was quoted as saying by Sun Online.
Shukoor was not responding to calls from Minivan News at time of press.
In his speech at the inaugural rally, President Dr Mohamed Waheed meanwhile contended that only the coalition could foster national unity and overcome divisions in society.
?Only this coalition can create fraternity and unity among the people. Only this coalition can create unity out of different opinions,? he was quoted as saying.
Referring to the murder of moderate religious scholar and MP Dr Afrasheem Ali, President Waheed vowed that ?no stone will be left unturned? to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Dr Afrasheem?s murder was ?an atrocity that only happens in extreme political societies like Afghanistan and Pakistan,? he said.
?The man who slew him has confessed in front of judges. But the people who were said to have paid him to do it are still free. The fact that they are the cronies of the presidential candidate of the party that claims to be the largest in the country is something that all citizens should be concerned about,? he said.
Broad coalition
The government-aligned Jumhoree Party (JP) meanwhile?announced?last week that no decision has been made on whether to join a coalition backing President Dr Mohamed Waheed in September?s election, as it prepares to officially choose it presidential candidate and leader.
Fellow government-aligned PPM ? the country?s second largest party ? back in March elected MP Abdulla Yameen?to stand as its presidential candidate and has continued to reject calls to join a coalition against the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ahead of elections.
PPM Leader Gayoom previously told local media that Dr Waheed?s coalition presented no threat to the election bid of its own candidate MP Yameen.
Former Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, who was sacked from the post after becoming Yameen?s running mate, strongly criticised President Waheed?s coalition at a campaign rally on the island of Villingili in Gaaf Alif atoll last night (May 25).
Coalition parties were more concerned about their share in the government ? in terms of cabinet posts and positions in state-owned enterprises ? than serving the public, Dr Jameel reportedly said.
Meanwhile, MDP presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed contended during an interview?with state broadcaster Television Maldives (TVM) on May 16 that President Waheed and the DRP had been forced to form a coalition out of necessity.
Nasheed questioned the coalition?s claims that it presented a ?third way? for voters as opposed to the policies of the MDP and PPM and reiterated his belief that?power-sharing coalitions were not compatible with a presidential system of government.
?I do not see a citizen who wants ?another way.? What is the path to deliver this way [to development]? We do not hear [political parties] talking about that,? he said. ?We are presenting one path to that [development]. We believe MDP?s policies will bring prosperity to the people. I do not see this third way you referred to as ?a way.? I see it as two men with no other way. That is not a political philosophy,? he said at the time.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? An Oregon teenager intended to blow up his school in a plot "forged and inspired by the model of the Columbine shootings" and he will be charged with attempted aggravated murder, a prosecutor said late Saturday.
Grant Acord, 17, will be charged as an adult and also faces six counts of manufacturing and possessing a destructive device after investigators found six bombs in a secret compartment in his bedroom, said Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson.
Acord was taken to a juvenile jail Thursday night after police received a tip that the youth was making a bomb to blow up West Albany High School, located about 75 miles south of Portland.
He said Acord had written plans, a checklists and a specific timeline for the attack. The bombs investigators found included pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails, a Drano bomb and a napalm bomb, Haroldson said.
Police found no bombs during a search of the high school.
Haroldson declined to provide the specific date Acord allegedly planned to attack the school, but said it would be included in court paperwork to be filed after the Memorial Day weekend.
"That said there were also some indications that it could happen at any time, too," Haroldson said. "So you have - A -the methodical planning and then - B - I suppose he could get really excited about it and go early."
Acord is a junior. Haroldson said he's not aware that the youth had any major problems, such as a suspension, at school.
"In any case that you have a young person that in essence plans to take a video game approach to killing people at school, you have to take a close look at the mental health issues," he said. "And the process will certainly provide for that once he's represented by counsel."
Phone listings did not appear to be available for either of the boy's parents to reach them for comment Saturday.
The district attorney said it did not appear the teen was targeting a specific person or group of people. He said Acord will likely be arraigned Tuesday in Benton County Circuit Court in Corvallis.
"I can't say enough about how lucky we are that there was an intervention," the district attorney said. "When I look at the evidence in the case, I shudder to think of what could have happened here."

When President Obama says Ronald Reagan would no longer win a Republican primary, as he did in the heat of the 2012 presidential election, Grand Old Partyers are probably not inclined to spend too much time wondering where it all went wrong for their party.
But when a former Republican presidential candidate, Bob Dole, says essentially the same thing on Fox News, as he did Sunday ... well, Grand Old Partyers are probably still not going to get too worked up about it. But it might at least perk their ears a bit more.
The challenges facing the national Republican Party are well known, having been thrown into sharp relief last November. Mr. Obama soundly defeated Republican candidate Mitt Romney among women, minorities, and youth. In a race taking place amid a largely stagnant economy, a president seen as extremely vulnerable won the Electoral College tally, 332 to 206.

It's a far cry from the days when Mr. Reagan won 49 of 50 states in 1984. Back then, there were Reagan Democrats. These days, it seems, there aren't even Bob Dole Republicans.
"Reagan couldn't have made it. Certainly, Nixon couldn't have made it, because he had ideas. We might've made it, but I doubt it," he said on Fox News Sunday.
Not content with saying that the most illustrious Republican leader of the past century would have been run out of his own party today because he had "ideas," Mr. Dole went further.

"They ought to put a sign on the National Committee doors that says 'Closed for repairs,' until New Year's Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas," he said.
We're guessing that he's now somewhere behind New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on the list of prospective keynote speakers at next year's CPAC convention.
To some, his comments will sound like the sour grapes of a man whose time has passed. But that might be the very reason they are so telling.
There is no question Dole is a different political animal from many of the Republicans (or Democrats) currently on Capitol Hill. He was a legislator in what is increasingly becoming an outdated sense of the word: Someone who made deals. Yes, often in the proverbial smoke-filled backrooms. Yes, often greased with the pork of pet projects for legislators' districts. But deals nonetheless.
In his comments to Fox News, Dole did not just single out Republicans for their intransigence. He looked to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with befuddlement, too.
"I think as a president, he lacks communication skills with his own party, let alone the Republican Party. And he's on the road too much," he said.
Translation: The president, like the Republicans, doesn't know how to make deals.
For Dole, who served as a senator from Kansas for 27 years, the idea of a Washington that doesn't know how to make deals is utterly foreign. It is Hollywood without egos, Detroit without automobiles, Atlanta without grits. Deals were Washington's very reason for being. Washington was political dealmaking. Without it, D.C. is just a bunch of squawking pinstripe suits.
Reagan was a part of that Washington. He made deals on immigration and on taxes. Bad ones, many conservatives would say. But deals nonetheless. They were part of his political DNA.
Could someone like that have passed the GOP's orthodoxy tests? Big ideas, after all, are just that ? reaching across political lines.
The answer is not "yes" or "no." Like LeBron vs. Jordan, the answer is that different people adapt to different times. Would Reagan have rejected the current tea party-fueled ethic of political principles ?ber alles and become another Arlen Specter? Or would he, like House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio or Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona ? men who were once more like Dole ? simply have adapted to the political realities of the day.
That is an unanswerable question. But Dole is asking it.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? (AP) ? Syria said it targeted an Israeli vehicle that crossed a ceasefire line into its territory earlier this week because it was heading toward a village with a large rebel presence.
In a letter to the U.N. Security Council circulated Friday, Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said his country exercised its right to self-defense and would respond immediately to any other violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Syria accused Israel of violating the U.N. Charter and the separation of forces agreement that followed the 1973 Arab-Israeli war when it sent the vehicle into Syrian territory and launched two missiles on Tuesday. He said Syria expects the Security Council "to put an end to Israel's violations."
Israel said an Israeli jeep came under fire during an overnight patrol on its side of the cease-fire line in the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau which Israel captured from Syria in 1967 and later annexed. Syria has demanded its return.
Syria claimed it destroyed the vehicle, but Israel said the jeep suffered only minor damage and no one was hurt. Israel said it returned fire at the source and scored a "direct hit."
Since the Syrian civil war broke out in March 2011, there has been growing concern of spillover across the tense border with Israel. The incident Tuesday was the latest in which gunfire and mortar shells have struck the Israeli side of the Golan in recent months. Israel believes that most of the fire has been incidental spillover from the Syrian conflict, but that several cases, including Tuesday's, were intentional.
In his letter, Ja'afari said that at 1:10 a.m. on May 21, "an Israeli vehicle crossed the cease-fire line and proceeded towards the village of Bi'r Ajam, which is located in the liberated area of the Golan within the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic."
"The presence of armed terrorist groups in that village led the Syrian armed forces to target the above-mentioned Israeli vehicle," he said.
Syria refers to opposition fighters as "terrorists."
Ja'afari reiterated Syria's claim that Israel is interfering in Syria's internal affairs "through its provision of logistical support for armed terrorist groups in Syria, including those that are active in the area of separation of forces."
Israel's air force chief, Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel, warned Wednesday that tensions with Syria could escalate into a "surprise war" and that Israel needs to be ready. He said Russian S-300 air defense systems are "on their way" to Syria, though Israel asked Russia not to supply the advanced air defense system to Syria.

Women at a particular stage in their monthly menstrual cycle may be more vulnerable to some of the psychological side-effects associated with stressful experiences, according to a study from UCL.
The results suggest a monthly window of opportunity that could potentially be targeted in efforts to prevent common mental health problems developing in women. The research is the first to show a potential link between psychological vulnerability and the timing of a biological cycle, in this case ovulation.
A common symptom of mood and anxiety problems is the tendency to experience repetitive and unwanted thoughts. These 'intrusive thoughts' often occur in the days and weeks after a stressful experience.
In this study, the researchers examined whether the effects of a stressful event are linked to different stages of the menstrual cycle. The participants were 41 women aged between 18 and 35 who had regular menstrual cycles and were not using the pill as a form of contraception. Each woman watched a 14-minute stressful film containing death or injury and provided a saliva sample so that hormone levels could be assessed. They were then asked to record instances of unwanted thoughts about the video over the following days.
"We found that women in the 'early luteal' phase, which falls roughly 16 to 20 days after the start of their period, had more than three times as many intrusive thoughts as those who watched the video in other phases of their menstrual cycle," explains author Dr Sunjeev Kamboj, Lecturer in UCL's Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology. "This indicates that there is actually a fairly narrow window within the menstrual cycle when women may be particularly vulnerable to experiencing distressing symptoms after a stressful event."
The findings could have important implications for mental health problems and their treatment in women who have suffered trauma.
"Asking women who have experienced a traumatic event about the time since their last period might help identify those at greatest risk of developing recurring symptoms similar to those seen in psychological disorders such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)," said Dr Kamboj.
"This work might have identified a useful line of enquiry for doctors, helping them to identify potentially vulnerable women who could be offered preventative therapies," continued Dr Kamboj.
"However, this is only a first step. Although we found large effects in healthy women after they experienced a relatively mild stressful event, we now need to see if the same pattern is found in women who have experienced a real traumatic event. We also need further research to investigate how using the contraceptive pill affects this whole process."
