Tucson welcomes home veterans with parade

Hundreds of Tucsonans lined sidewalks downtown Saturday for the Tucson Welcomes Home Veterans Parade to show appreciation to military members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The United States was engaged in combat in Iraq between March 2003 and December 2011. Troops have been in Afghanistan since October 2001. Combined, U.S. troops have seen a total of 19.25 years of fighting in the wars, according to U.S. Central Command.

Nearly 6,800 men and women, included 52 from Southern Arizona, have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. As of Friday morning, 47,400 men and women have been wounded in the wars, Central Command said.

The parade followed a remembrance service Friday at Pima Community College's Downtown Campus where the names of the nearly 3,800 fallen were read. The reading lasted 13 hours.
