Fibromyalgia - diet for pain | Revista Women's Health

Many people affected by fibromyalgia, experts say that some patients have reported that the pain is mitigated by adequate intake of food.

But we must bear in mind that not all people can eat food which we state below as they may have an allergy to any of them. You can find their own food sensitivities by eliminating foods that trigger pain.

Recommended foods for fibromyalgia

  1. Alkalizing (rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium) are among the most important lettuce, endive, parsley, plantain, millet, almonds, corn, chestnuts, etc..
  2. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids: oily fish, flaxseed oil, canola, walnut, soybean, wheat germ and hazelnut.
  3. Rich in antioxidants and calcium: apple, pear, almonds, hazelnuts, sesame.
  4. Vegetables (rich in calcium, vitamin C, folic acid and beta-carotene), carrots, onion, celery, cabbage, etc..
  5. Grains (rich in selenium, vitamins by fiber): wheat, oats, rye, etc..
  6. The soybeans and soybean products provide protein, calcium, iron, iodine, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, folic acid and b vitamins.

Foods not recommended

  1. Acidifying (rich in phosphorus, sulfur and chlorine): among the highlights are those containing additives and sweeteners, refined flour, canned, etc..
  2. Rich in oxalates: spinach, chard, beets, etc..
  3. Rich in saturated fats fatty red meats, sausages, butter, whole milk, etc..
  4. Rich in purine: organ meats, red meats and seafood.
  5. Nightshade vegetables: ie they contain solanine, a toxin that acts on the enzyme forming the muscles causing increased inflammation and pain, among them are: tomato, potato, pepper, eggplant, etc..
  6. Alcohol, caffeine, salt and refined sugars irritate muscles and are stressful to the immune system.

When acidosis by the abuse of these foods are symptoms such as chronic lack of energy, sour taste on awakening, susceptibility to fatigue and cold, prone to depression, swollen and tender gums, cavities, dull hair and alopecia, skin dry and cracked, brittle nails, brittle, cramps and muscle spasms, problems with osteoarthritis, increased deposition of crystals in the joints and inflammation, susceptibility to infections and sore muscles.

General recommendations for fibromyalgia

  1. Splitting of the daily intake into 4 meals for a good deal of calories. Do not skip meals.
  2. Eat in a relaxed and unhurried.
  3. Increase dietary fiber intake by eating a minimum of 5 servings of vegetables and fruits.
  4. Choose white meat (chicken, turkey, rabbit) and fish (at least twice a week oily fish).
  5. Drink plenty of fluids (about 2 liters daily). Do not abuse alcohol.
  6. Maintain a healthy weight.
  7. Do moderate exercise and adapted.
